How do you know that it's time to throw away cosmetics? Favorite remedies usually run out very quickly. Those that didn't fit are also sent to the trash, and we don't remember them anymore. But what to do with that collection of cosmetics that has been lying around for years and is used occasionally? How long can you store mascara and foundation, is it true that powder does not deteriorate when it's time to throw away lipstick and eyeliner?

Why is it important to monitor the shelf life of cosmetics

Dried mascara that does not color well is still half the trouble.

The main thing to worry about when using expired cosmetics is its health safety. Rashes, irritations, infection, even chemical burns - all these unpleasant problems can become yours if you do not follow the deadlines.

Why is this happening? Cosmetics contain preservatives that allow the product to remain usable for longer. But they are not eternal, and have a certain shelf life. Microorganisms, mold, viruses, bacteria and fungi can easily get into an open tube (especially if it is mascara or eyeliner, since these products come into contact with the mucous membrane of the eye). 

The second reason to keep track of deadlines is not so dramatic for health, but it is also important. Over time, the chemical composition of cosmetics changes, and it becomes less effective. For example, it will not be applied in such an even layer as after opening. 

How to understand that it's time to throw away cosmetics

There are several simple rules for the revision of a cosmetic bag. If a remedy, even the most beloved one, falls under at least one of these points, it's time for him to say goodbye.

Check the dates on the package

Is this foundation "nothing yet", or is it time to go to the trash? The easiest way to answer such a question is to check the packaging. Look for a small picture in the form of an open jar with a number, for example, "6M" or "12M". This means that the product can be used for 6 or 12 months from the moment of opening. 

Latin designations may occur. For example, MFG is the date of production, or EXP is valid until such and such a date.

See if the color, smell and texture have changed

New cosmetics usually smell nice or “nothing” if, for example, it is hypoallergenic. If the product has changed color, smell, texture (for example, the cream is now heterogeneous, but with lumps, or the product has layered into several layers), you should immediately pay attention to this.

Recommendations on the service life of cosmetics

Even if the product still seems “alive” and after the expiration date, whether it can be used is a big question.

The shelf life depends on which part of the face you use cosmetics on, and whether it contains water. The “drier" the product, the longer it can be used. 


The life span of a lipstick is 1-3 years and depends on the type and quality of the raw materials used for its manufacture. If you would apply the product with a brush, which you also do not be lazy to wash regularly, this will help to avoid contamination a little and prolong the period.

If you bought a lipstick "in reserve" and it was waiting in the wings in compliance with storage conditions and in an unopened package, then the period here is still no more than 3 years.

Lip Gloss

The product is more liquid than lipstick, so it lives less - up to 1 year. Also, the applicator for applying the product touches the lips, and this moment also affects the shelf life of lip gloss. 

Blush and bronzer

Powdered, creamy or liquid blush generally lasts up to three years. The bronzer will last the same amount.

Highlighter and concealer

The shelf life of these products is from 6 months to 2 years. The more liquid the form, the less cosmetics will live. The drier and harder it is, the more.

Mascara and eyeliner

In order not to run to the doctors later because of unpleasant eye problems, remember the sad numbers: mascara lives from 3 to 6 months maximum. In addition, it is the mascara that carries with it the highest risk of infection, so it is better to be safe and just buy a new one. The same goes for eyeliner. 

Powder

It all depends on the specific remedy, but you can focus on it for 12-18 months. There is no water in the powders, which promotes the reproduction of bacteria. Just do not forget to wash the powder puff with which you apply the powder - it is recommended to do this every two weeks, or as it gets dirty. 

Shadows
Since shadows are applied to the area around the eyes, it is better not to use them for longer than 1 year. If these are dry shadows, the deadline is 3 years.

Nail polish

So there is a long-lived man in your makeup bag! The varnish can be used until changes in color or texture have begun (most often the product “delaminates").

Perfumes and other fragrances

If the perfume is stored for a long time, the smell is likely to change, and you will definitely notice it. On average, fragrances are stored for 3-5 years, after that it is better not to use them (skin reactions are possible).

How to extend the life of cosmetics

Almost all cosmetics like cool and dry places, away from direct sunlight. 

It is better not to store cosmetics in the bathroom - humidity and non-constant temperature conditions (for example, when you take a hot shower) negatively affect the formulas of cosmetics.

Do not collect too many cosmetics “in reserve”, limit the number of repetitive products or shades. Most likely, you will not have time to use everything on time, it will be a pity to throw it away, but you will have to.
