Daruma (Jap. 達磨 or だ る ま) is a Japanese traditional doll tumbler, personifying Bodhidharma, in Japanese syncretic mythology is a deity that brings happiness. The doll has a second name - Togaku. The doll is made of wood, papier-mâché or paper and has no arms or legs: according to legend, after nine years of meditation, Bodhidharma’s atrophied limbs. A doll is usually painted in red or, more rarely, in purple, green, yellow or white. It depicts a beard and mustache, but eyes are drawn without pupils.
White color Daruma refers to the desires of love and harmony; golden - about wealth and prosperity; yellow - about safety and security; purple - about health and longevity; red - about luck and happiness.
A person who has bought or received Darumu doll as a gift should make a wish or set a goal (which should be concrete, real and achievable within a year) and draw one eye. Daruma doll is put in a visible place in the house, in the office, in the shop, etc. and serves not only as an ornament, but also as a constant reminder of the goal set or the wish expressed.
Ritual:
Daruma is used in the annual New Year's ritual of making wishes:
1 - determine the specific goal you intend to achieve.
2 - paint one of the eyes (whether left or right) to show your desire to reach the goal.
3 - Put the doll in a prominent place in the house so that while Daruma focuses on your goal, you will not stop thinking about her and go to meet her.
4 - as soon as the goal is achieved (and that is how it will be), finish drawing Daruma's second eye, so you say “Thank you!”
5 - Write the achieved goal on the back of Daruma.
