The complex is based on squalene (C₃₀h₅₀), an unsaturated hydrocarbon, a precursor of steroids and cholesterol in humans, animals and plants.

It was first isolated from the liver of deep—sea sharks (hence the name - from the genus Squalus).



The human body synthesizes squalene itself, because it is an essential intermediate in the biosynthesis of cholesterol and steroid hormones. The main ”factories" of squalene are the liver and skin, especially the sebaceous glands. 

Dermal squalene is one of the most powerful lipophilic antioxidants. It neutralizes singlet oxygen 100-200 times more effectively than vitamin E and protects skin lipids from peroxidation.
